Francis Coquelin left the field after a severe clash of heads with Younoussa during Stade Lavallois’s Ligue 2 match against Nantes on matchday two. According to Superdeporte, it was among the most worrying moments of the round in France.
The collision came in the 12th minute as both contested a high ball. The impact was heavy and players from both sides immediately called on the medical staff.
Coquelin and Younoussa received treatment for several minutes while the stadium fell silent. Both left the pitch on stretchers and the game restarted after the stoppage.
This was Coquelin’s first start since returning this summer to Stade Lavallois, where he came through the ranks from 2005 to 2008 before joining Arsenal’s academy.
He had made his debut with a 25-minute cameo in the 3-1 defeat to Rodez. Lined up from the start against Nantes, his former club, his evening ended in the worst way because of the blow.
The midfielder remains a favourite among Valencia CF supporters after his spell at Mestalla from 2018 to 2020, having helped win the 2019 Copa del Rey. An official medical update was still awaited, and footage of the incident has caused significant concern over the force of the impact.
