Northumbria Police are investigating alleged online racist abuse aimed at Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey after Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. The force said it is looking into reports of discriminatory comments posted on social media.
A fiery contest at the Stadium of Light featured several flashpoints involving the Dutch forward. Early on he challenged Pedro Porro, prompting debate over whether further punishment was warranted. Later he appeared to nudge Cristian Romero into goalkeeper Antonín Kinský, angering visiting players, before Nordi Mukiele struck in the second half to seal the win.
After full-time Brobbey posted on Instagram and a number of alleged discriminatory comments circulated online. Police have condemned discrimination and stressed it has no place in society or local communities.
It is the third such incident in three months. Recent cases have involved Romaine Mundle, including after February’s Premier League match against Fulham, and Lutsharel Geertruida.
Sunderland condemned the abuse in the strongest terms and offered Brobbey their full support. The club has reported the incident to the Premier League, the relevant social media platforms and the police, and expects swift action against those responsible.
The club pledged to keep calling out racism clearly and unapologetically whenever it occurs, and underlined that football must be a safe and inclusive environment for all.
