Sunderland have condemned alleged online racist abuse aimed at Brian Brobbey after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham, saying they are supporting the striker. The ill-tempered match featured several flashpoints involving the forward before attention shifted to social media after full-time.

According to Sunderland Echo, Northumbria Police have confirmed they are investigating reports of discriminatory comments circulating online following the game.

The club said the abuse was unacceptable and not isolated, highlighting recent cases involving Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida. It added that the matter has been reported to the Premier League and relevant social media platforms, and urged swift action.

Mundle was targeted after the Fulham fixture in February. Last month’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park was paused in the second half under the Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocol after a report from the crowd, with referee Anthony Taylor halting play. A 45-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Northumbria Police said they condemn all forms of discrimination and are looking into the posts. The Premier League said it stands with Sunderland and Brobbey, has offered support, and is working with clubs, authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to tackle the issue, adding that anyone found guilty faces the strongest consequences, including custodial sentences, football banning orders and criminal records.
