When the summer transfer window reopened, there was an expectation that Arsenal would be busy reshaping their squad. Having finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive season, the Gunners were determined to strengthen their hand in pursuit of the title.
The Gunners did not disappoint. They invested heavily, bringing in striker Viktor Gyökeres and defender Piero Hincapié, two players who are expected to raise the overall quality of Mikel Arteta’s team. Both signings addressed key areas of need: Gyökeres offers a new focal point up front, while Hincapié brings depth and versatility to the back line. Alongside these headline arrivals, several fringe players were moved on to balance the squad.
Despite the fresh additions, Arsenal also faced a big decision over one of their most high-profile players. Gabriel Martinelli, once considered untouchable, was the subject of speculation throughout the summer. According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal were open to his departure for a fee in the region of £60 million.
However, interested clubs were only prepared to pay around £40 million, well below the Gunners’ valuation. In the end, no deal was struck, and the Brazilian winger remained in North London.
This marks a significant moment in Martinelli’s career. While his explosive pace and directness once made him a fixture in Arteta’s plans, his output has dipped. He struggled to make a consistent impact last season and has not begun the current campaign in convincing fashion.

For Arsenal, this season could prove pivotal in deciding Martinelli’s long-term future. If he rediscovers the spark that made him one of the Premier League’s brightest young attackers, he could cement his place in the team and justify the club’s decision to hold firm. But if his struggles continue, the next transfer window may present another opportunity to cash in.
Competition for places is fiercer than ever following the arrivals of Gyökeres and other summer signings. That pressure could either reignite Martinelli’s form or highlight the case for a sale. Arsenal’s decision not to lower their asking price suggests they still believe in his potential, but the coming months will be decisive.
