Social media leaks on Wednesday evening revealed a verbal agreement with Peixoto while Edwards remained in post.

It is understood Edwards learned of the development via family while abroad on holiday, and he had been using the break to plan Wolves' transfer window.

A phone call on Thursday morning then informed him he had been dismissed, and some senior staff were understood to be unaware of the planned change.

Peixoto will leave Portuguese side Gil Vicente after 16 months, having led them to sixth in the top flight last season.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang and Wolves chairman Nathan Shi worked with agent Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency to seal the deal.

Mendes then presented Peixoto, a Gestifute client, to the club.

Benfica had also shown interest before appointing former Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Peixoto is known for front foot, attacking football, which is believed to have appealed to Wolves. In announcing Edwards' sacking, Shi hinted at a shift in style and philosophy.
