Stade Rennais have moved to sign Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as they step up early-window business. Toulouse want the best deal and competition is emerging.
Ouest-France reports that the 23-year-old, under contract until 2028, has agreed terms with Rennes, but a transfer remains distant. An initial bid is below the €25m Toulouse are seeking, and there is little sign Rennes will go that high.
Rennes turned to defence after Eliezer Mayenda’s impending move from Sunderland. Cresswell was shortlisted last winter amid the prospect of Jérémy Jacquet departing, and he now profiles as a replacement for the Under-21 international sold to Liverpool for €70m. He arrived in 2024 and has completed two full Ligue 1 seasons.
The 2025 Under-21 European champion also has admirers in England. After a first approach last winter, Crystal Palace are monitoring the situation, awaiting the end of the World Cup and a possible exit for Maxence Lacroix, who is on Chelsea’s radar.
The Eagles and new head coach Pierre Sage are also considering options at Lens in a defensive area familiar to him, although nothing concrete has been tabled. That, for now, leaves Rennes as the favourites to land Cresswell.
