The Olimpico’s tribute to him will likely be the only positive note Daniele De Rossi will take away from this first match against his Roma.
His Genoa side, in fact, were soundly defeated by Gasperini’s Roma 3-1 and were practically never in the game.
DDR analyzed the defeat to the Roman side to the media as follows: “The players approach things the way the coach approaches them, and evidently today I made a mistake. I earned compliments against Atalanta and Inter, but today we made more mistakes, we were less aggressive.”
On the Olimpico’s tribute to him: “I relived old emotions. I would have liked to go in a different mood, less angry. The result didn’t matter, though; I would have said goodbye regardless. I didn’t say goodbye last time; that Curva never emptied and will always remain in my heart. I’m sorry I went there with a somber face because I’m disappointed with the result.”
“I saw the players watching the scene; the lads were fantastic, and even the Roma players were shocked when I was sacked. I have a great relationship with the players; they’ve been exciting months, and I’ve seen them in great form; today they were superior to us. I carry a great sadness from this night; I want to bring great joy to the Genoa fans against Pisa.”
On Soulé and Koné: “I happened to be in charge of a summer transfer market, and I tried to bring in the best players possible, in terms of age and future prospects. Whoever coaches them now coaches them well, and I take credit for that, but only up to a certain point. The team is strong, and they proved it today.”
