Flamengo have announced the signing of Joaquín Freitas on a contract running to 2031. The 19-year-old arrives as Pedro’s immediate back-up and will wear number 30.
Flamengo still need to register the forward on the CBF’s Boletim Informativo Diário, the BID, and are racing to clear him as soon as possible. The next game is on Wednesday against Mirassol at 19:30 at the Maracanã, a rescheduled fixture from round four of the Brasileirão. There is no guarantee Freitas will be available.
According to ESPN, he brings power, pace, unpredictability and personality. They add he played 30 times for River Plate in a short spell, scoring one and providing two assists, often from the right wing. In youth at River and at Acassuso he stood out as a centre-forward or second striker, while with the seniors he featured more as a foil than a traditional number nine.
Freitas trained with the Flamengo squad on Tuesday. He is considered one of the recent talents to emerge from Argentine football.
Despite the rush, the club view the transfer as a medium to long-term investment. Leonardo Jardim’s staff should give Freitas time to adapt to Brazilian football.
