Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Marc-André ter Stegen as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper following Manuel Neuer's definitive international retirement. According to BuLi News, the new Germany coach said the role is ter Stegen's for the moment.

Neuer returned from international retirement for the World Cup, then stepped away from Germany duty again. Ter Stegen is on loan at Ajax from Barcelona after recovering from injury.

Klopp said a side needs stability and a spine, with youth added around that. He has known ter Stegen for years, rates him as world class, and noted Neuer had long been the best in the world. He added that ter Stegen is fit again and looks the same goalkeeper as before, bringing experience and making a strong impression, while stressing selection will be performance based.

Klopp has named 44 players, split into two squads, for four UEFA Nations League fixtures.

For the first two games the goalkeepers are Finn Dahmen of Augsburg, Alexander Nübel of Besiktas, and Marc-André ter Stegen of Ajax.

Dahmen is the only goalkeeper in both squads, joined by Noah Atubolu of Freiburg and Jonas Urbig of FC Bayern for the latter two matches.
