Leeds United have signed Nico Elvedi on a three-year contract, shortly after confirming Sebastiaan Bornauw and Joel Piroe had departed. The Switzerland defender immediately referenced the rivalry with Manchester United.
The 29-year-old ends an 11-year spell at Gladbach, where he made 364 appearances, and reunites with Daniel Farke after their time together at the club.
Leeds are understood to be paying around £8.2m in total. It is believed the fee is £6.8m up front, with add-ons potentially taking it to £8.5m.
“I know they have a big history and also, a big rivalry with Manchester United. So, we try to beat them this season. It’s such a big club with amazing fans, and I cannot wait to play in this stadium,” Elvedi said. He was speaking to LUTV.
“Yes we [Elvedi and Okafor] spoke a little bit at the World Cup about his club, and of course, about the manager. It’s also a big reason for this change. Only played one year under Farke, but learned a lot.”
Signed to replace Bornauw, Elvedi will add competition at centre-back for 2026-27, which begins on Saturday. There are further Swiss links too, with Isaac Schmidt sold this summer and Willy Gnonto having previously played for FC Zurich.
