Leeds United have signed 29-year-old Swiss defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a three-year contract, in a deal worth up to €10m (£8.5m).
Leeds will pay an initial £6.8m with a further £1.7m in add-ons, with the experienced defender replacing Sebastiaan Bornauw, who has joined Hamburg on loan. The club said in a statement that Elvedi joins on a permanent deal as the fourth addition of the summer and brings significant experience to Daniel Farke’s squad.
Leeds view Elvedi as cover across all three central defensive roles. Although right-footed, he has frequently operated on the left of a back three as well as centrally and on the right.
He reunites with Farke, having made 34 appearances and scored three in 2022/23 at Gladbach.
A FC Zürich academy graduate, he joined Gladbach in 2015 and amassed 364 games and 19 goals. His 318 Bundesliga outings rank eighth on the club’s top-flight list and are the most by a non-German.
He has 73 Switzerland caps, debuting in 2016 against Belgium at 19. He featured at Euro 2016 and every major tournament since. This summer he played every minute as Switzerland topped Group B and reached the World Cup quarter-finals in North America, matching their best run and first last-eight since 1954.
