Leeds United have confirmed the signing of Nico Elvedi on a three-year contract, their fourth addition of the window.
According to Leeds Live, the fee is £6.8m (€8m) plus up to £1.7m (€2m) in add-ons, taking total outlay to around £80m and net spend to a little over £50m.
Elvedi arrives as a direct response to Sebastiaan Bornauw’s switch to Hamburg. Leeds had agreed that move earlier but waited to sanction it until a replacement was secured.
The Switzerland international, capped 73 times, played 34 games under Daniel Farke at Borussia Monchengladbach in 2022/23. Over 11 years there he operated across the centre-back positions.
He featured in all six of Switzerland’s World Cup matches to the quarter-finals and surpassed 300 Bundesliga appearances last season. He also has 15 Champions League main-stage outings and is 29, turning 30 next month.
His arrival follows those of Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford. He is eligible for the Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest and could make Saturday’s squad.
He is to start the season as fourth-choice centre-back but looks set to offer more competition than Bornauw, whose exit was sparked by the player’s side. Bornauw’s professionalism was noted, and he started only five league games after a £5m move from Wolfsburg last summer.
