Corinthians have reversed course and agreed a two-year extension with Memphis Depay, keeping him at the club until 31 July 2028. The announcement arrived on Tuesday with social posts and a video retracing the Dutchman’s honours at Parque São Jorge.

President Osmar Stabile had decided against renewal when the contract expired on 31 July, citing finances, a call that sparked heavy backlash from fans and sponsors. ge.globo reports that the club also faced the prospect of a R$ 180 million claim over revoking an agreed extension.

Talks restarted on reduced salary terms, altered benefits and a negotiation of sums owed to the forward. Sponsors pressed for his stay, with Fatal Fans signalling an add-on of up to R$ 10 million if others contributed.

Stabile sought guidance from the club’s Cori, which backed the renewal after the vote finished level at six each and chair Miguel Marques e Silva broke the tie. The council is consultative, and the president then confirmed the extension.

The deal was registered on the CBF’s BID at 15:30, so Depay could be available to Fernando Diniz for Thursday’s Libertadores last-16 second leg against Rosario Central at 21:30. Corinthians need a simple win to reach the quarter-finals.

He rejoined training on Tuesday and has not played for Corinthians since 27 May, a 2-0 home defeat by Platense. Signed in September 2024, Depay has 79 games for Corinthians with 20 goals and 15 assists, winning the Campeonato Paulista, Copa do Brasil and Supercopa Rei.
